چکیده

The performance of a generic surfboard fin is investigated in a cavitation tunnel to gain basic understanding of the viscous flows involved for future systematic experimental and computational studies. Measurements of lift and drag forces, pitching moment and results of flow visualisation are presented. Surface flow visualisation studies reveal relatively complex boundary layer transition and separation phenomena although lift and drag characteristics are virtually invariant with Reynolds number in the range tested. A mixed twoand three-dimensional separation behaviour is observed at high incidence.

“Cannot ventilate, cannot intubate” situation after penetration of the tongue root through to the epipharynx by a surfboard: a case report

BACKGROUND Surfing is an increasingly popular activity and surfing-related injuries have increased accordingly. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of penetrating upper airway injuries in surfers. We present a "cannot ventilate, cannot intubate" situation following penetrating neck injury by a surfboard fin. CASE PRESENTATION A previously healthy 29-year-old Japanese m...

Hydrodynamic properties of fin whale flippers predict maximum rolling performance.

Maneuverability is one of the most important and least understood aspects of animal locomotion. The hydrofoil-like flippers of cetaceans are thought to function as control surfaces that effect maneuvers, but quantitative tests of this hypothesis have been lacking. Here, we constructed a simple hydrodynamic model to predict the longitudinal-axis roll performance of fin whales, and we tested its ...

Hydrodynamic Performance of Deformable Fish Fins and Flapping Foils

A computational study of fish fin hydrodynamics is being conducted concurrently with experimental analysis. The presence of a complex shaped moving boundary makes this a difficult proposition for computational fluid dynamics and here we use a Cartesian grid based immersed boundary solver designed to handle such flows in all their complexity. High resolution, high speed video of fish fin movemen...

Experimental Investigation on Hydrodynamic and Thermal Performance of a Gas-Liquid Thermosyphon Heat Exchanger in a Pilot Plant

Waste heat recovery is very important, because not only it reduces the expenditure of heat generation, but also it is of high priority in environmental consideration, such as reduction in greenhouse gases. One of the devices is used in waste heat recovery is heat pipe heat exchanger.Anexperimental research has been carried out to investigate the hydrodynamic and thermal performance of a gas...

Numerical Study on Hydrodynamic Performance of Bionic Caudal Fin

In this work, numerical simulations are conducted to reveal the hydrodynamic mechanism of caudal fin propulsion. In the modeling of a bionic caudal fin, a universal kinematics model with three degrees of freedom is adopted and the flexible deformation in the spanwise direction is considered. Navier-Stokes equations are used to solve the unsteady fluid flow and dynamic mesh method is applied to ...
